Coccyx Injections

Often when the tailbone, or coccyx, is broken or damaged, it never completely heals. This can result in chronic pain. Tailbone pain, also called Coccydynia, can be treated in a few ways such as activity modification, supportive pillows and dietary changes. However, if home remedies have not provided lasting relief, then a Coccyx Injection is a non-surgical option that can alleviate tailbone pain.

A Coccyx Injection is an anesthetic mixed with a steroid to reduce inflammation and pain. The injection is inserted into the tissue surrounding the coccyx, which the bottom portion of the spine at the tailbone. Pain relief can last for several years. If the first injection is effective at relieving pain, then patients may receive up to three injections in a year.

If you’re suffering from the following symptoms, a Coccyx Injection may bring you longer-term pain relief:

  • Localized pain and tenderness in the tailbone region
  • Increased pain when sitting
  • Pain that worsens when moving from sitting to standing
  • Pain that increases with bowel movement or sexual intercourse
